Unreliable as love: Reid’s Her Wicked Marquess is the second book in the Sinful Wallflowers series, after My Darling Duke, a truly stunning novel.
Amazon.it forgets to say the Marquess belongs to the same series. I wonder if that’s to avoid hurting the first book’s chances, because this marquess is far from perfect. But first, let’s give credit where it’s due.
A historical romance with great characters
A historical romance with great characters. The characters work. They’re wonderful and their dialogue sparkles. She’s a girl very sure of herself, he’s a man of wonderful steadiness and charm. But we get to enjoy this gorgeous couple far too little. Too often the story stops for pages and pages of sex straight out of an anatomy textbook. So of their emotional evolution, all we’re left with is that he finds her beautiful and brilliant and she finds him a total hunk. Full stop. It all happens the first time they meet, meaning when they tie the knot.
A hot Regency romance
A hot Regency romance. There’s no mutual discovery, no balancing each other out, no life stories blending together… All of it sits inside a story that could have been called “Scooby-Doo and the Black Dahlia,” a penny-dreadful plot.
A period romance with a penny-dreadful backdrop
A papier-mâché backdrop where the magnificent leads talk little and bang a lot. Basically, once the setup is done, I read this novel without reading it. Suffering, flying over the pages, pulling from each one the bare minimum on how the story was moving along. One star.
