How to hide in the woods and enjoy a great novel
One of the best reading experiences the woods can give you. A forest has no clear edges and is big enough to hide a determined reader properly. Add Italy’s patchy cell coverage, and often you can’t be tracked or traced in the woods even by phone. Woods have few landmarks, so they’re also the best places to get lost. Which is exactly what someone is trying to do when they want to be captured by a good story.
Ditch the family hike
Keeping the woods in mind is key on family vacations in August, with the excursion to some abbey, some hermitage, some scenic lookout. Don’t like trekking? Does physical effort horrify you, and nothing will ever be as good as finding out what happens next in your story?
The moment the relatives stop to eat a sandwich, the trick is to spot the thicket and vanish, sure you can enjoy your favorite novel in a marvelous setting, with no one turning up to ruin it.
Practice your excuses and contrite faces ahead of time, of course.
What to wear and pack
The key to hidden woodland reading is a bit of gear: comfort supplies and the right clothes. Long sleeves, long pants, socks and comfy shoes. Go for dark clothes, and don’t go into the woods on hunting days, usually certain days of the week and only in a certain season: mostly late August to December.
Dark clothes are recommended because you’re alone, lying down, quiet and lost in a book. Besides being hidden from the world, that makes you practically invisible to any ill-intentioned types. Do ill-intentioned types roam the woods? Far, far fewer than on city streets!!! If you do run into anyone, it’ll be mushroom pickers. But in the woods the feeling of solitude makes you eye anyone with a bit of suspicion.
A small bottle of helichrysum tincture and one of lavender oil or tincture won’t hurt. Helichrysum is for skin irritation. Lavender oil or tincture helps if recent rain and heat have brought a few mosquitoes among the trees.
Skip the blanket
Protective sheets and blankets to lie on are not recommended: you’d miss the best part. True, there are photosensitizing plants that can set off nasty hives, and ticks and tiny insects. But once you’ve made sure there are no pinecones, rocks or chestnut burrs under you, lying against the earth and breathing in its smell makes the reading experience truly unforgettable.
That direct contact with the elements avoids the annoying feeling of not having really lived, which reading sometimes leaves you with, especially at home. Skin against the temperature, the smell and texture of the undergrowth give a little feeling of adventure and boost the emotional high you get in and thanks to the novel.
Which novel to bring to the woods
Yes, but which novel? Thrillers are strongly discouraged, for one: you’re alone and unprotected, don’t forget. Reading about the big hitman lurking in the trees will send a drop of cold sweat down between your shoulder blades. Same goes for horror. What works instead: slightly new-age spiritual fables, fantasy, romance and historicals.
