Woman in a 1920s dress reading a book in a vintage car, burgundy linocut illustration for car bunburying

The English invented bunburying, so they made provisions for winter too, with that pitiful invention: the gentlemen’s club. Typical English. In Italian clubs nobody reads. They crunch pumpkin seeds and play scopa. At least that’s how it goes in the gentlemen’s clubs of Italian taverns.

So. You’re in the city, it’s raining, the bathroom is tiny and clogged with drying laundry. Where do you find one hour of absolute peace with your favorite novel? In the car! Obvious, no?

Yes, the car isn’t just the place where dirty things happen before, during and after marriage. It can be a decent spot for car bunburying, the reading kind. Here’s how.

Choosing the right spot

Start by appreciating the perks of the location. You’re safe in a metal box, invisible and unreachable at the same time. But where, exactly? Yes, I mean it. You’re safe in your Faraday cage, you’ve locked every door, now look past the windshield: where are you? What spot did you pick?

Find a place where lots of other people sit parked like you, engine off. Classic example: schools. But if you’re a man, no. For men we recommend the outside of train stations, airports, bus terminals.

Settling in

Good, you’ve found your spot. Now get comfortable. We have a problem: the gearstick, the steering wheel, the lumps and bumps of the door. First thing: move over to the passenger seat.

Winter heating

Now the problem is heat. In winter the car cools down fast, and if you don’t want to keep moving over to restart the engine, you need to come prepared with a car heater that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

It will suck power from the car battery, so you might fall back on an electric hot-water pack, a pre-charged heating pad and/or a chemical warmer.

The electric pack holds a gel that heats up after just three minutes plugged in with its own cable. It stays warm for several hours.

In any case, the car bunburyist will make sure to pack a cozy blanket.

Seating comfort

And now, seating comfort. There are fantastic mattresses made for the back seats, or for the passenger seat if it reclines (see photos). But we suspect that if you have to flee your home just to read, your lifestyle doesn’t exactly allow for tearing out the seats.

So here’s the fallback: we recommend a fold-out chair bed, placed behind you against the door, while you stretch your legs out on the seat beside you. One with armrests, as you can see in the photo.

Especially if you read in print, you’ll want to add a lap tray like the one in the photo, from Ikea, which settles on you thanks to a cushion underneath.

Customizing for your literary taste

Now for specific cases.

The car can be customized to suit your literary taste. We show a few options beside this text, with one single warning: erotica readers, skip the red lights if you actually want to read.

Summer alternatives in the city

The car is a handy winter fallback. In summer it turns into a furnace, so in the city the alternative problem comes back. A fairly safe place in Mediterranean cities is the flat roof where the water tank lives, or the laundry room, or the cellar. Otherwise you need places where contemplation is justified.

Not parks, no. If you sit on a bench, people will sit next to you and talk to you. If you sit under the trees, you may find all sorts of things in the grass. If you get near the pond, the mosquitoes will eat you alive.

Yes to: bookshops and newsstands.

Find a newsstand or a bookshop in a tree-lined area. If there’s no bench nearby, you’ll need a folding chair, always at hand in your car, like the one we recommended for shower bunburying.

Next to newsstands and bookshops, you can count on the displacement effect. Passersby see you reading by the newsstand, and their interest shifts almost instantly to the books and papers on display. Non-readers, so as not to be quizzed on their literary insecurities, usually steer clear of both newsstands and bookshops, keeping a safe distance.

Bunburying at the seaside

And since we’re back on summer, a word for those who holiday by the sea in places not sufficiently protected by rocks and cliffs. We won’t linger, because the choice is obvious: the pedalo! Or a small boat dragged ashore, which you can commandeer without asking.

Ovvio, no?

Ecco come fare.

Sistemarsi nell’abitacolo

Personalizzazioni secondo i gusti letterari

Alternative estive in città
