There are two types of romance readers: Type A and Type B. And each has a favorite kind of heroine: the Type A heroine and the Type B heroine. Look, here comes heroine A now.
“Hey, hold on a second: where are you rushing off to on that bike?”
“To deliver this gorgeous bouquet to my aunt. See? She has that pastry shop on the corner.”
“Why are you dressed all in yellow, with those red curls? A tad flashy, no?”
“Oh yes, and I love it. I feel full of energy, and nothing will stop me from growing artichokes in a flowerbed in Hyde Park, just so you know! Not even that hateful banker who won’t give me the loan.”
Okay, giant Facebook thumbs-up, because we’ve already got the picture… right?
The Type A heroine
The horrid banker will turn out to be six foot six, athletic, with a springy stride and a raven-black eyebrow ready to rise in indignation and then laugh at the quirks of our heroine A.
We wave goodbye to our dazzling, cheerful A and banish her from this article, now and forever. Her place is romantic comedy.
The Type B heroine
So, once the road is clear and she’s been reduced to a yellow dot on the horizon, we get the chance to focus on a figure we had first mistaken for the trunk of a linden tree.
She wears a brown raincoat hanging open over denim shorts, worn over black-and-white striped tights. Her hair is brown, her skin is wan, and her thoughtful eyes are the color of the forest floor.
It’s her, the Type B heroine! The heroine of the revenge romance. No point talking to her: she’d stammer truths she can’t admit even to herself. Like being deeply ashamed of being flat as an ironing board, of throwing up on the swing, and of suffering from allergic rhinitis. She loves painting and would never leave the art room of the kindergarten where she works, but she is terribly lonely. Why else would she be planted there under a tree next to the trash can? Ah, that’s why she’s there! She’s waiting for a brooding, all-muscle guy to jog by. She’d love to paint his portrait, too bad he’s a hitman by trade and keeps in shape for exactly that purpose. But she doesn’t know it, and by the time she finds out it will be too late. The hitman’s love will make her bloom to the point of proudly flaunting her champagne-coupe breasts and laughingly braving the giddy thrill of a dreamy afternoon on the roller coaster.
The revenge romance
Yes, this is the revenge romance: a heroine wronged by life, or by someone in particular, who gets even through love. The protagonist redeems herself humanly, psychologically, in her very identity, thanks to love.
Does that mean the readers of revenge romances are wan girls with big forest-floor eyes?
Absolutely not.
Who really reads the revenge romance
Leafing through the pages of the revenge romance, we’ll find women who are the exact mirror opposite of our protagonist. Readers determined to give flesh to the girl who never found room in their own lives. Busy, practical, resolute, combative women, not at all inclined to fall for killers.
Authors and compensation
The same dynamic holds for authors: think of Meyer of Twilight, a Mormon, compensating with a heroine in love with the devil. What else does the vampire evoke?
Romance and female sexuality
Much has been written to belittle the reader of the revenge romance, but behind it lies, as American women have sharply observed, fear of female sexuality. And it must be said: the romance genre was exactly the public legitimization of female sexuality and its many demands.
Vedi? Ha quella pasticceria all’angolo.»
Assolutamente no.
