Camp Momentary: Candace Camp covers, A Momentary Marriage and Un pragmatico gentiluomo.

From Camp, a pragmatic and utterly charming gentleman: Candace Camp’s A Momentary Marriage.

This novel has a wildly original plot, a real masterpiece. Sir James is sharp-featured, broad shoulders, high cheekbones. His face is more gaunt than usual, and it suits him. The fact is, he’s dying.

A stabbing pain digs in behind his eye. His legs won’t hold him up. His hand shakes. His last hope is a country doctor just outside Canterbury, but James doesn’t put much faith in it. He’s resigned to dying. Just past thirty, his whole emotional life runs on a huge mastiff and a collection of medieval manuscripts. Too bad the Canterbury doctor died just two weeks before Sir James showed up, and the only one there to greet him is the doctor’s daughter, Laura…

Well, I won’t tell you what the whole first half of the book is about, him dying and yet there’s this sexual tension… The characters open up to each other, slowly, beautifully.

A historical romance with a dying hero

In this historical romance with a dying hero, the first half is the one that stays with you. In the second half, the book swerves closer to a mystery.

A marriage of convenience with real tension

In this marriage of convenience with real tension, the characters’ inner conflict hardens. It gets a bit repetitive, sliding into the usual romance “blah blah blah”… You can tell perfectly well they love each other, but they keep missing each other anyway…

A historical romance with a mystery

Okay, the mystery plot in this historical romance is really well done. All told, a five-star novel, and the first half alone is worth ten.

I personaggi sbocciano gradatamente l’uno all’altro in modo meraviglioso.
