Right hero, right place, right time: Cornick’s Wager is a wager won.
To get over some recent letdowns, I played it safe and mainlined another Cornick. Not much introspection, and suspicious knickers, but it kept me up past bedtime until the very last page. Can’t help it: I like the comforting hero. The sure thing. The one who turns up in the right place at the right time. And this Marcus is exactly that. Smitten with her when he thinks she’s a courtesan of the most expert kind. Undaunted when he decides she’s a schemer of the most treacherous kind. Undaunted even when she locks him in the cellar, double turn of the key. He doesn’t give up 🙂

A historical romance with a strong heroine

A historical romance with a strong heroine. It’s not a flawless book, starting with the knickers. Blame a friend of mine. She’s the one who opened my eyes to the risk of mentioning underwear before anyone actually wore it. So every time I see knickers on the page, I wonder if it’s a mistake. Then there’s the lack of introspection, like I said.

A Regency romance with a practical heroine

But this book has one interesting twist: she’s strong-willed and practical. She marries very young to a doddering old coot, doesn’t bat an eye at the horror of her conjugal duties, buries him fast, no regrets, and inherits the lot. And even with a tall, dark lord in front of her, a fine specimen who lacks absolutely nothing, she keeps fretting over losing her independence.

A period romance with a golden retriever hero

A period romance with a golden retriever hero. The heroine runs her affairs as well as a man does. Better, even. The hero, on the other hand, never has the thought “hm, maybe I shouldn’t crowd her.”
Nope!
Armed with the duty to protect her, he smothers her. She finds him everywhere, hopeful as ever about defending her from the cynical, crooked world. Meanwhile she handles that world just fine and walks away without a scratch. 🙂
