Carroll O’Connell, Chalk: The Chalk Girl, children strung up in trees, and a little girl with an elfin smile acting as consultant to sociopathic detective Mallory.

A gorgeous O’Connell mystery

This is one of Carol O’Connell’s best novels. Beautifully written, especially in the first half, with that dreamlike, fantastical touch only she can bring to what’s properly a thriller.

A mystery built more on atmosphere than on a lesson about evil

The subtext, the lesson about evil, is always the weak spot in O’Connell’s work, and here more than ever it bends to the need to talk about rats, schoolchildren, dangling corpses and “Williams kids.” Mallory stays in the background, a moon goddess too busy chasing fireflies.

A mystery with a standout character

The victim is a fantastic character, a portrait of a boy sketched through a handful of extracts at the start of each chapter, a truly gorgeous character.
